I feel like this is the perfect platform to open up about my background in makeup. Hmm where do I start? Well Ive had a passion for makeup since I was in high school. I decided to take the first step by attending M.U.D beauty school in Soho, NYC. Sadly I didn't learn much, I took the main beauty course which lasted a month and 15 days. They mostly taught us how to do stage/tv makeup, which wasn't very beneficial to me considering that wasn't the direction I was heading in. So for about a year I was really scared pursuing a career in makeup. I wasn't too confident and I kind of held off looking for a job. Until one day I randomly walked into my local Sephora to actually shop, and I coincidentally asked one of the managers if they were hiring. She said yes and I got the job two weeks after. I was super nervous working for them because I had no professional experience in makeup. Little did I know a lot of their employees didn't know much about makeup either. So I felt at home. Working at Sephora opened up a whole world for me, there was so much to learn about and it was the best place to practice my skills. The more I did makeup the better I got. I eventually left Sephora to go work for Mac. That's where I grew the most. Working around so many skilled artists was amazing. After so many months of working for Mac, I reached a point where I felt I needed to quit. Reason why is because I knew I wasn't meant to have a boss, my only boss was me. I have never been one to follow, and taking directions was not my strong point. So I knew I had to move on to the next chapter. I freelanced for a while until it wore out. Instagram started to open so many doors for me, and I was excited for new opportunities. I discovered that my next venture would be blogging on Instagram. Ive always enjoyed taking pictures, not just of myself but of anything I found interesting. I'm a very visual person, and with Instagram I was able to combine all the things I enjoyed (Makeup, Fashion, Photography, Design) My life has changed drastically due to Instagram and I am thankful for all the people that supported me. I just want to say don't ever give up on your dreams, as cliché as that sounds. Go for what you want and don't let anyone stop you. Life is too short to settle for anything less.
Awesome Post. I left MAC too 3 years ago and have been working for myself ever since. I definitely understand where you are coming from. Much success to you doll :-) VirgoVixxin-IG

DeleteAmra, I have to admit i am very very proud of how far you have come! I have followed since god knows when! I fell in love with your personality when i started watching your videos on KEEK! Your trip to cali with your friend that time had me in tears lol. You are my role model and you inspire me in every way possible. I always wanted to learn about make up and eventually turn it into a career. And from reading this post you give me that motivation to just never give up on something that i can potentially love doing. I cant lie my ass knows nothing about make up yet i love seeing talented MUA's like you and get a sense on how to get started . I think the first time i ever wore a smokey eyed look was for a photo shoot i did 2 years ago which is my default pic now lmao. Nonetheless i want to wish you many many great success in your life! I was truly heart broken when you announced your move to Cali because i figured i will now have a smaller chance of meeting someone i truly look up to considering i live in NY and you was In Brooklyn. Great story! I have been wanting to blog for a while and have recently started a blog but am still learning and researching. What advice or tips do you have to have a successful Instagram/blog?
ReplyDeleteWell the easiest one to manage is the one I'm using, through blogger.com. It basically allows you to use your email to start it up. I watched youtube videos and that's how I figured out how to set it up.
DeleteI have been obsessed with you since day one of Instagram! I am so happy to have met you in person at Samer's seminar! You are even more beautiful in person, love how far you have come in the makeup industry, very inspiring!
ReplyDeleteThanks babe!! Likewise it was so nice to meet you too! I hope you're doing well :)

I hope this school help me enhance my skills, teach me a lot because there is more to make up then i think and im hoping to build the confidence and feel more comfortable applying makeup on others....
ReplyDeleteThanks love :)))
DeleteI'm so happy I came across this post because I'm going through what you went through! I just graduated high school and I know I want to do makeup! It makes me happy and I love helping people out with whatever knowledge I have. And I'm excited to start my makeup school, but it is kind of hard when you don't really have anyone to support you. Reading this definitely encouraged me because you are a big inspiration to me. You're amazingly talented and flawless girl!! I hope I ready your level haha thank you so much for this
ReplyDeleteThanks babe! And best of luck to you! You can do it xoxo
DeleteAmrezy! I'd like to say thank you for considering this blogging that your doing, and your work and fashion is amazing your such a doll for taking the time to do this for the many people that you inspire such as myself. I just have a simple question since heat wave & whisper of guilt were both limited editions what illuminator would you recommend? Thanks!! ☺
ReplyDeleteThe only other one I can recommend that isn't limited is Mac "Soft and Gentle". The color is completely different though, its more of a silver highlight as opposed to a gold highlight (which I prefer)
DeleteThank you so much for sharing your journey so far! I live in NYC like you did and I've been looking for the right makeup school for a while now, because they are so expensive and its taking me a while to save up the money. I'm also afraid that if I go to a school I won't learn much like what happened to you :/ but I guess it's on me after that to find my creative side and do my own thing. Thank you so much for this blog and for sharing with us what you do! love you and everything that you do. you're the best! <3
ReplyDeleteThank youuu! :))
DeleteThis was an amazing blog! I always wanted to know where you started from & what inspired you to be wher you are. Thanks for sharing! <3
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading! :))
DeleteAmazing success story and beautiful person. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I'm new to makeup, still can't put on eyeshadow but I love highlighters. Should you change highlighter colors when it gets cold? Won't I look crazy as a bronze glowing statue in the dead of winter...? But I do want a glow. How do I do it without lookin crazy??
ReplyDeleteMuch success to you..xo
Thank you! And no I don't think you have to change highlighters, well atleast not powder ones. Ive had certain highlighters for years now and they're still in great condition, and you can always use it even in Winter ;)

ReplyDeleteHow do you get your make up to stay on all day if you don't use a primer? My makeup doesn't last more than a few hours before I have to touch up and then I get dry patches and cakey (I moisturizer before) and I have laugh lines all the time. How to get rid of them? I haven't found a primer that works for me.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea why my makeup stays on all day, but at the same time it doesn't look as fresh as when I first do it. Makeup isn't meant to stay perfect the entire day, and smile lines and under eye creases are inevitable. Unfortunately makeup isn't magic, it wears off after a couple of hours
DeleteYour work is amazing Amra! Keep it up! I love what you do and im always on your insta page i love love love your make up and your fashion taste. Girl you rock!
ReplyDeleteGlad to see this blog! You have such a huge fan base and your talent is undeniable. You are an inspiration (obviously) to so many aspiring MUA's. Thanks for opening up here and inspiring us with your advice and personal story. All the best to you!

I was thinking about. Applying for Mac. Everyone says it's a dream job but I know you'll be real to me and tell me what's the real deal with it I work at a car dealership right now and I hate it so much lmfaoo it has nothing to do with what I like to do I spend my day looking at makeup. Thinking about makeup whatsoever. Lol so I was thinking in applying either in sephora or Mac. I would like to know what would you think would be best for me due to I have a lot of stress here already I don't want to go into something worst I don't mind stress if it's what I love to do I don't mind anything but I don't want to jump into something worse
ReplyDeleteThat was a great story. It got me thinking on how much i have in common with u. Only that Im a nurse and have a passion for make up and fashion. I have been in the medical field for about 6 years now and i like and all but my heart is with fashion and make up. I would love to get more experience in the make up and fashion part lol but i dont k ow where to begin or start? Any advice? Like u, I dont really take direction well and would love to be my own boss. How did u do it? I want to fully commit to my passion in makeup and fashion and work in that. I would quit my job as nurse to pursue my dream. I think, no, i know u will make a good mentor ;) (hint, hint) lol. Do u have any advice for me on that? Or what should i do first, where to begin??
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love your Instagram and blog. I've recently started getting into make up and would love to get to your level ! Amazing !! How long did it take you to learn and perfect your work? Xx
